Default Need help with timing belt

I have installed my crank lock but the cam doesn't line up right, it is off a few degrees. Can someone look at these pics and tell me what I need to do to fix this problem?

Don't know myself but have you been through the timing belt faq?

Maybe there's wear or it wasn't done right before or something else.

Yes, I had that page on my ipad as I was doing this. Couldn't get the cam pin to go all the way in with the crank lock installed, decided to continue figuring it was only off by a degree or 2 but now it appears to be more than that.

Since you've already removed the belt and the car was in running condition before, in this case I'd move the cam so that the pin does go in. Just triple check that the cam and crank tools are inserted correctly. I can see by the position of the arrow that the crank lock is OK. If all appears OK, the belt stretched or was adjusted previously.

For the lurkers, this is a prime example of why you should always use the tools despite some people getting by without them and guessing on the belt position. No reason to rely on luck when the consequences are thousands of dollars in damage.

Ok, I will do that. It makes me nervous to move it if the engine was running correctly like this but if I'm good as long as both tools are installed I will just move it so the pin goes in and continue.

Just make sure that the pin is actually going into the hole and not off to the side! Your picture shows the lower camshaft sensor tab as wide. I couldn't get a clear pic of this with the engine in the car so I used one out of the Passat. To avoid any confusion, I just added this note to the writeup:

(NOTE: the picture is of a Passat TDI engine. It's not possible to get a clear picture of this on a Jetta with the engine in the car. The only difference on your Jetta is that the lower-right tab is wide instead of both being narrow, and the lower tab is wide instead of narrow. It's otherwise the same.)

Default Tool T10052 question

I have loosened the cam hub bolt a couple turns according to the instructions here and still can't the thing to come off. I hand tightened the 3 small bolts on the tool all the way down and then tried to tighten the large bolt to pop the thing off but it isn't coming off. How much torque should be required to get it off? I wasn't too hard on it because I don't want to break anything. Seems like it should come off easy with the tool.

Edit: Just got it off, I was worried a bit too much about damaging my cam or the borrowed tools and wasn't applying enough torque. Another half turn and it popped right off.
