Well I did the timing belt and replaced the cam over the weekend and the car is running great. I actually had 2 bad lobes on the cam but my bearings were in good shape. The top bearings looked just like new and the bottom ones were worn but still had a ways to go before the copper would have started to show. I removed the cam without removing the tandem pump and had an oil leak afterwards so I ended up removing the tandem pump anyway and replacing the gasket and sealing around the #5 bearing cap to stop the leak. Just finished the break-in today and replaced the joe gibbs oil with some diesel high tech. Tired of working on this thing for now but will probably do the clutch and flywheel replacement in a month or two. Maybe one day VW can make a TDI with similar reliability to the japanese cars, only people who enjoy doing constant maintenance should own one of these. I'm gonna take a 1000 mile trip tomorrow, hopefully there will be no problems.
