"Inspected and found there is combustion gas coming back through the intake causing loud ticking noise. Inspected and found Turbo OK.No obvious external exaust leaks or cracks. Removed the fuel sending unit in the tank to check for injector seal failure and found there is a lot of soot in the tank. Found the fuel inj. seals leaking into the Head causing back flow of combustion gas and soot in tank. Recommend Head, Injectors, Sending Unit,Fuel Filter." Is this the popular Camshaft failure plus or where do I start. I have some Mech, experience but have not worked on any newer models so am pretty green. The original complaint by owner to Dealer was that the car was making a loud ticking noise and looses power going up hill. |

Is there a better heading for this as it does not seem to get many members responding under Cyl Head Problem. |

We're assuming that the dealer's diagnosis has some merit...
I'd contact Frank Irving (as mentioned above)... Since he doesn't log on here often, use the e-mail option in his profile... http://www.myturbodiesel.com/forum/members/franko6/ He has extensive experience with cylinder heads and is also an expert with injectors... Good luck... keep us posted... Yuri |

There is a chance that it is just the cam going bad, dealers always recommend a head, even when cams and lifters get the job done? Just saying...

I had the same problem with my 06. There was a noticable lope and associated ticking noise in the engine. I had the dealer do a diagnostic and they said that there was exhaust gas getting into the intake, but would not elaborate...when I asked them if they had checked the cam, they said it was fine and that they had removed the valve cover to check it. Needless, I was not overly convinced of their conclusion that it was not the cam (I have had & worked on engines that have lost a valve before), so I removed the valve cover my self and found that the exhaust lobe on cylinder 3 was severely worn. I replaced the cam my self and the car has been running good since. The cam on mine went at about 139K.
This is a common problem on the BRM engines and sounds like the most likely candidate for what you are experiencing. |
