Default 2010 Audi TDI owner with poor mileage

I have a 2010 Audi TDI with automatic trans and get good highway mileage (42 is typical) but poor city mileage (19-22 is typical). I have about 13K miles on it. My driving style is conservative to average - I don't use the manual mode or sport mode. I use brand name diesel fuel. I have complained to the dealer twice and they say it "performs to design", which I think translates to there are no fault found on the car's computer. Any suggestions? I really like the car otherwise.

Location: Berkeley. Hills and city driving = poor mpg. Is 19-22 instant or averaged? Because if instant that sounds normal when accelerating.

I live in the Berkeley hills as well, but seem to get far better fuel economy. For the sake of science, how about driving from the Claremont hotel up Claremont and then along Grizzly Peak to Centennial and back? I'll do the same and we can compare mileage. Would be interesting to see how it comes out, and if yours is substantially lower, you could use that info with the Audi dealer.

That is average mileage for trips running 3-10 miles.

Sorry for the delayed response. I thought I would get an email alert if someone responded to my question.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for your offer. I'm up for doing that. I'll take the same route in each direction and report back later this week.

Sorry for responding so late to your offer.

Paul

I tried the route you suggested, averaging about 25-30 mph and got 26.7 mpg.

Default Berkeley hills mileage

I'll do the same run in the next day or two and let you know what the results are.

Ok. I just did it. Car was already warm and reset the computer at the intersection of Domingo and Claremont. By the time I reached Claremont and Grizzly the mileage was 16.8. From there it improved, reaching 27.5 at Grizzly and Centennial. Started heading back and the mileage had increased to 32.5 at the intersection of Claremont and Grizzly. By the time I was back to Domingo and Claremont the mileage was 39.3.

Mine is a 2011 JSW with manual transmission and 20k miles.
