Was the rear main seal replaced or removed recently?

Do you have VCDS? You can use that to check camshaft sensor. Possible things that could cause a problem other than sensor are timing belt, cam wear, wiring problem.

The part the cam sensor sees is what the cam sprocket bolts to. As I recall the sensed part protrudes slightly over the top of the valve cover.

Is it possible you damaged a wire or knocked the sensor out of position or damaged it or the part that is sensed, somehow when changing the cam?

VAG Error Code: 19464
EOBD II Error Code: P3008

Fault Location:
Camshaft position (CMP) sensor - signal limit exceeded

Possible Cause:
Insecure rotor.
Camshaft alignment.

VAG Error Code: 19463
EOBD II Error Code: P3007

Fault Location:
Camshaft position (CMP) sensor - no signal

Possible Cause:
Air gap.
Insecure sensor/rotor.
Wiring.
Camshaft position (CMP) sensor.

As taken from my Free EOBD II Error Codes software

brings up that crank angle sensor and camshaft sensor are both Hall type sensors.
