Default Timing belt and head gasket r and r

I guess its time to change the timing belt and replace the head gasket on my 01 tdi golf. It appears that my water pump may be leaking around the timing belt area. i cant see exactly where the coolant is coming from but the passenger side around the timing belt is soaked with coolant. Also there is a squeal coming from that same area. could it be the pump itself? also the head gasket appears to be leaking. has anyone replaced a head gasket? if so do you have to shave the head or just replace the gasket? The coolant in the expansion tank is also oily looking. is this noramal? thanks

Best guess would be a head gasket and timing set. While you are at replace all the belts, check bearings on all components and probably take care of the cam seal.

don't have to shave the head but would check it. read the ALH head removal article in FAQ for DIY.

coolant mixing w/black stuff can also come from egr cooler or oil cooler
