The car has 147,000 miles on it and it was shifting very hard and would shutter after it warmed up. I pulled the trans to find a broken finger on the pressure plate a DMF that seemd to be defective. It was locked up and difficult to rotate for bolt access. I replaced the clutch, pressure plate and flywheel with a non DMF and a sprung hub clutch. It now shifts and drives very smoothly but the shuttering upon clutch release is rattling the car apart and almost un-drivable. I inspecting the dog bone and just rebuilt it today with the ECS rubber kit and now I have vibration at Idle (clutch in out our) and the shutter upon clutch release is still there. Q: do I need to use the DMF system? Should I be looking into replacing the motor mount or the mount at the rear of the trans? Do I have an alignment issue between the trans mount and the dog bone? FYI, the PP doesn't have fingers all the way around, that could have been it, see the clutch FAQ for some pics.
DMF failed. If jammed and covering bolt holes you know for sure. With all that new stuff it should have fixed the clutch problem. I would have suggested dogbone issue but you ruled that out. Motor mounts don't go bad like that normally but it's possible. You could also have a broken motor mount - mount on engine, common on pass side. Don't have to use DMF, totally not related to the clutch issues. Lastly, what clutch kit did you use? Also, since some tech questions, editing title and moving to mk4 section |

I used a grip force OE replacement for a VR6 so I could get a heavier steel flywheel.

Since the posting of my shuttering problem, I have located the problem. What is happening is the motor and transmission are moving back to front at a rapid pace when the clutch is released and causing severe shuttering or vibration. Upon this discovery I have replaced the Left side transmission mount with a new OEM version and rebuilt the dog bone with an ECS rubber kit, and the shuttering has continued (slightly less). In a effort to resolve this, I have ordered the OEM replacement Right side motor mount however I am having my doubts this will work.
Q: is there an aftermarket add on torque arm or damper that could be installed on the upper left side? This is where I am seeing all the movement in both forward and reverse gears? Something else is needed besides the transmission mount to absorb the Upper movement. As a test I put the old rubber back into the dog bone and it did reduce the upper movement by allowing greater lower movement, but not enough to solve the shuttering issue. Someone please help! am I missing something??? |
