That pipe coming off the exhaust manifold is original. If you remove it without blocking it off, all the exhaust will come out that hole.
You may want to learn what is on the other side of that pipe. I don't see a cooler. At least in the US, only the 1996 Passat TDI didn't have an EGR cooler. |

Thanks for the reply ccbb, I understand how the ERG system works & whats on each side of the pipe, I was just wondering why there was no cooler present, the pipe does look oem, but I thought a cooler should have been present and this may have been a custom made pipe where by someone had removed the cooler.
