Default about to do engine swap

hi, im about to do an engine swap on my 2002 golf tdi, do i need to take out the tranny or can the motor come out without tranny, it is a 5 speed stick shift.

Either way is fine. Not too much more work to remove the transmission, see the mk4 trans removal article and you'll have easy access to the bell housing bolts.

Take the bumper off then the slam panel and radiator all come off, gives you loads of room and you can fit the engine from the front. Probably a good bit easier to take the box and engine out together tbh, you can swap the box across while the things out too then pop it all back in. Great car for it though. One of the easiest I've done but just good to have a hand when getting the mounts on because of the weight.
