Runs rough after cold start and blows smoke out exhaust...and ideas? Runs fine otherwise...

Is yours a MkIV 1999.5 (turn signals in the same housing as the headlights) or a MkIII 1999 (turn signals in their own housing lower in the bumper) ??

Try to locate someone with VCDS (new name for Vag-Com) or even a generic scanner and let us know what the error codes are...

Offhand I'd suspect the MAFs (Mass Air Flow sensor), but that's strictly a guess...

Maybe a sticky VNT actuator? Maybe even check the injector pump timing?
