Default thermostat question

hey, guys put a timing belt kit in my 96 passat tdi this weekend, anyway all looks good except the thermostat seems to be leaking , i didnt see any write up on the thermostat instalation so i put the O ring on after the thermostate pushed it up and tightened the bolts, did i do something wrong any ideas thanks

I pinched the o ring in between the mating surface. kind of a tricky thermostat on this car .

Please add 96 to your car spec, you could change volkswagen to VW as we know what Passats are?
