Default Swopping instrument panel - key code

I have just scrapped/stripped down a 1998 Passat B5 and replaced it with a similar 1999 B5. The old car had two working keys, the new car only one. As my wife and I both drive the car we need two keys for the new car.

I have hit the usual problem of getting the second key - without spending £100 at the VW dealer - which I did for the original car. No, I don't have the SKC, just the £900 car, key and log book.

I have had a replacement key cut, it fits the locks and starts the car - which of course cuts out after a few seconds due the immobiliser not finding the correctly coded transponder chip.

I have a registered copy of VCDS-Lite and a third party OBD cable and have succesfully read data from both cars (of course I can no longer read the old car as it is in bits!) but I feel reasonably confident to play around with the VCDS.

However, as I still have the old instrument cluster, would replacing the instrument cluster from the new car with the one from old car mean I could use the two glass transponder chips from the old keys, I assume the code is kept in the instrument cluster?. The mileages are similar, the older car 165,000miles and the newer 154,000miles so cannot see anyone objecting to me adding miles to a car.

I am not too bothered about the remote function, the batteries always seem to flat anyways.

Is it a straightfoward job to swop the inst. panels or do need the SKC to do it?

Thanks for reading through this, any help appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.

Well you're going to need the SKC and the only device that will get that apart from a dealer (but they don't see the number) is VAG TACHO. Yes the VCDS-Lite will program keys if you have the SKC.

Please add 1999 B5 Passat to your car spec?

Default Thanks.

Thanks, I suppose that would have been too easy. Also it would be rather easy to use a stolen car that way. Better visit my local dealer.

you might be able to buy a second hand key off ebay and then programme it yourself. Here's some information on a web page that helped me... http://autokeysquad.co.uk/vw-remote-...gramming-guide . If it gets too confusing, you can always run to the dealer so got nothing to lose.

If you read here he can't programme a key without the SKC so it will have to be a trip to the stealer.
