Default just got a second 96 passat, broken timing belt

I am very happy to now have a second passat, I love the first one so when I found the second one that was in really good condition other than the engine I had to get it even though my wife was not terribly excited about the new project. If you have had a timing belt break and have any advice for me I would love to know what all you needed to do.

The Timing belt shredded and broke because the oil pump somehow caused it to break according to the guy's mechanic who had changed the belt not long before it broke. The intermediate shaft runs the oil pump I think, could the shaft or pump really have broken? I will have to tear it apart to find out I guess. I expect at the least to need a totally rebuilt head with all new valves so the valve head doesn't pop off later and go through the engine and turbo. Does anybody know a good shop that could rebuild this in southern california or one that is good that I could ship it tothat does good work and isn't terribly unreasonable? On these engines do the valves hitting the piston usually cause catastrophic damage like bent rods and destroyed pistons or is it mainly in the head? I have seen both cases on gas cars I have fixed before, sometimes just the valve is bent or the piston is dented and grabs the rings so there is no compression or the rod bends and then cracks the cylinder wall. I would really hope for the best even though that is not really realistic, it is allmost always the worst case that happens, I really hope I don't have to replace the whole engine, maybe I am not as excited about the car anymore after thinking about all the work and money that is going to be spent!

Looking forward to any advice and help I can get, possibly encouragement too as I discover all the problems I am taking on.

One of the most highly regarded cylinder head rebuilders is Frank Irving in Lockwood, MO... yes, it's worth shipping the head off to him... and he can also supply all the other parts you'll need... http://www.myturbodiesel.com/forum/members/franko6/

Good luck with the project!
