Just bought a 97 passat and cannot get the back doors open also am looking for an owners manual

can you open them from the inside? Try ebay for an owners manual.

If you can open them from the inside, the problem is with the handle. Look through the FAQ pages for a writeup on how to remove and examine the door handles. There are a few things that can go wrong and cause them to not function.

they will not open from the inside or the outside someone said something about a child lock

If it were the child lock it would disable the inside not the outside.
