97 Golf - Help! Cannot shift into 1st gear after engine install

Hi,
I replaced the engine on my 97 Golf GLS diesel. Re-used the same clutch and transmission as it was working fine before. Now, for the love of everything, it would not shift into 1st, instead goes to 3rd and stalls if I try to drive off. Works well from the 2nd gear onwards.
I did check out http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q/m...st-VW-Audi.htm but the shifter mechanism/cables look different on my car.
I would greatly appreciate any and all help on adjusting the mechanism to be able to shift into 1st.
