May be a little late, but I have done this and would be glad to help if needed. It really is not difficult at all, and I am thrilled with the way it works, ie being able to see behind the car when in reverse.

In your opinion, is the viewing angle wide enough to watch when backing-up, or are mirrors better? This also relates to spotting oncoming moving objects/pedestrians.

I'm curious if the Golf version (the one hidden behind the VW emblem) has enough room to fit the Passat ...

I have questions. Where these get? from Ebay? specially VCDS/vagcom tool? How can I buy? I think VCDS will be expensive! Pin removal tool T20, T25 screwdriver 13mm socket flathead screwdriver or trim removal tools 5amp small fuse for the fuse box VCDS/vagcom or volkswagen scan tool gloves so you don't muck up your interior with your grubby little fingers, and patience. |

Buy VCDS here: http://www.ross-tech.com/. If you can afford a backup camera, you can afford VCDS.

I bought a 2012 Jetta Sportwagen TDI from Southwest Volkswagen in Lafayette Louisiana in May of this year. The car came with just a plain radio and cd player. I bought a RNS 315 radio and had the dealer install the gps unit. I then sold the radio that came with the vehicle on EBay. A couple of weeks later I decided to install the back up camera after telling the dealer I wanted the camera also I was told it would not work with the RNS 315. I started reading on the online forums and had mixed opinions some posts say it will work and some posts say no. I found the part numbers for the camera and harness at VWDiscountparts.com The part numbers were for the VW Golf which is 14 or 15 inches shorter than the Sportwagen. The rear hatch handle is the same size on both Wagons so the camera handle fit perfect. Here are the numbers. Handle part number 5n0 827 566j Harness part number 5m1 970 161ac. These do work on the 2012 Jetta Sportwagen I just got mine back today 7-9-2012 from V.W. Plus LLC a independant VW shop in Lafayette Louisiana and the back up Camera works perfect. Christopher charged $300.00 labor and the camera and harness cost $388.85. There was another short harness piece that had to be purchased to complete the install that Christopher bought so I don't have that part number. These OEM VW parts are also avialable at VW parts center both part stores sell OEM VW parts. I hope this helps someone who wants to do the same upgrade that is why I am posting this info. We're going to have a backup camera installed on our SEL Premium with the RNS 510 next week. Does anyone know if the radio has to be turned on for the image to display. We often have the radio off, and hope that the display will power up even if the radio is off.
