"ASR Off" light stays lit .. 2006 Jetta TDI

Hey everyone! New TDI owner here, and new member of myturbodiesel.com! Very stoked about getting good mileage!

So here's my problem..

"ASR Off" Light stays lit, indicating that I don't have stability control working. The vehicle with skid marks light also stays on in the instrument panel. Is this a common problem for the 2006 TDI's?

The calipers and rotors were replaced right before I bought the vehicle (7000k ago), I thought it might be possible that the wiring to one of the wheel speed sensors wasn't connected properly and has just fallen off?
Where are the speed sensors exactly?

I have checked the fuses and when the rain lets up I'm going to check the wires going to the wheel speed sensors ...

I'm waiting for my bentley manual to show up, hopefully it has info on how to test the actual sensors.

Any help or insight would be greatly appriciated, I live in BC were there's lots of hills, rain and some times snow, so stability control does help on a regular basis for daily driving.

It's also possible that the wheel sensors was damaged, problem since you took ownership?

Also, get error codes so that you have a good idea what the problem is.

Those lights would show up if you disconnected the battery but should go off.

I actually baught the car in Ontario and drove across the country to BC and they it worked fine until I had been back for a few days...

The trip took a bight out of my wallet so I'll have to wait to get the codes read.

Also, how hard is the timing belt on these? I'm should do it as well now that the car is at 120k km's. I did the timing belt on my scirocco and it wasn't too bad.

I read the instruction that are on this site, seems i need some special tools, where can I pick those up?

Timing belt is not too hard, the only hard part is supporting the engine to remove the motor mount. I rent the special tools but not to Canada, sorry. Shipping+duty is too much so it might be cheaper for you to buy them. There are some links in the writeup to sources.

Those are intermittent electrical faults. Clear the codes and see what comes back, if it doesn't come back then I wouldn't worry about it. The ABS light is on because of this fault in the ABS module:

Remove a front wheel, and you'll see the actual wheel sensors and their wiring harnesses. I broke the wires on mine from using cable chains to get unstuck last winter. The clearance between the tire and the wires is not very much. The wires are easy to see, if they are compromised in some way, or just unplugged.

I installed in a new wiring harness for mine, because the wires were snapped off too short to splice. Otherwise, it would have been a simple thing to splice the wires and protect it with heat shrink.

My sensors were fine.
