Hello,

I have been a turbodiesel owner for over 10 years. Here are the current cars in our garage:

1996 VW Passat TDI (215k miles) My daily driver.
2005 B5.5 Passat TDI (130k miles) My wife's daily driver.
2000 Jetta TDI (105k miles) My 21 year old son's daily driver.
1997 Chevy Suburban, for our family camping trips.

I do most of the maintenance on my cars, and my son has taken on this responsibility on his car. I replaced the timing belt on the '96 Passat two years ago and have rebuilt the diesel injection pump and countless other small tasks.

I bought the 2005 four years ago. There were no service records available, so I don't know if the timing belt has been replaced. Today I have embarked on this procedure; I just removed the front bumper this afternoon (3 1/2 hour effort). I have all of the parts in the shop and am about to replace the timing belt, water pump etc. I will also perform everything on the service to do's up to the 100k service. I will probably consult this list frequently, and I am taking plenty of pictures as I go, sop hopefully I can contribute as well.

Cheers.

Welcome, check out the balance shaft writeup, a bad oil pump is a common problem on these cars as well. Check out the B5 FAQ here: http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q/b...DI-FAQ-DIY.htm, it's not necessary to remove the front service carrier for the TB, just loosen it.
