New to the forum after browsing other sites etc. for timing belt change how-to's. I don't know if it is worth the effort or not. I would like to say "I have done that!" more than saving a few bucks. I have 2 2000 jetta tdi's; one is 6000 kilometres away from 300K, and the other is 30K away. It is a used engine with 260K on it in a jetta with 420K on it. I have more money invested in it than it is worth, so I plan on keeping it for quite a while. Still a great ride! |

There's also the peace of mind of "having it done right". It's not just the money!
FYI, over 300k miles/500k km, you may want to change the oil pump chain and tensioner as cheap preventative maintenance. If it's already lasted 400k miles that's a plenty long lifespan for a part. |
