I'll ask the question in the tech section, but just wanted to say hi first. This is the first vw I've owned (although I drive a 2010 Transporter in work) and its great! |

Ok, I'll sneak the question in here while no ones looking ;-)
He wanted to loosen the three bolts that hold the camshaft on (the ones for altering the cam timing) so he could tension the belt. I told him not to as it would alter the cam timing and could cause all sorts of problems. He couldn't see this and that's when the foul language started! I'll let him do it just to get the job finished, but I marked the pulley first in case it did move. It moved a bit, then returned to its original position so all is well. So, am I right in thinking it was a bad idea? Please say yes :-) |

Sorry man I would like to agree but your both wrong lol, there's a locking tool that fits in to hold the cam in place and then you slacken those three bolts to allow the cam to move while tensioning the belt. You're supposed to use special tools to lock the cam and the crank first on a PD engine.
