Default VW factory procedure for fuel filter change

I'm thinking ahead to the 20k service and am wondering if I can hit the service writer with the question of "do your mechanics use the VW procedure to purge air out of the filter by energizing the fuel pumps with the computer" or words to that effect. I know that the procedures posted on this site and others has you doing that, and I know that it makes sense (I did it on my 09 for the 40K) but I don't know if it official VW maintenance procedure. i.e. I don't know if I can make an issue of it with the dealer.

Welcome to the forum.

There is a write up in FAQ on changing the fuel filter. How to change the fuel filter on 2009-2012 VW Jetta, Golf, JSW, and Audi A3 TDI (common rail engine)

Purging is listed in the Bentley service manual. I don't know what the techs see in their VW data but it should be the same.

Default VW factory procedure for fuel filter change

After I changed the fuel filter, I ran the tank pump manually, unplugged the plug, and applied 12V from a battery charger. I did not run the aux boost pump, as at the time i did not know about it, however the car ran fine

Even if you talk to the service writer, and he says their techs do purge the air after the fuel filter change, it doesn't mean the tech will do that. The only way to be sure is to watch.

Techs are paid by each job they do. Each job (Fuel filter change) is assigned a number of hours it should take. It is in the techs best interest to get say a 1 hour job done in 30 min, because they will get paid for the 1 hour job, and then they can move on to the next job and get paid for that one. They will make more money if they get say 12 hours of work done in an 8 hour day.

I am not saying all techs will cut corners, but there is motivation there to cut corners on jobs, especially if it is something the customer won't notice in the short term.

Talking to the service writer is probably a waste of time. If you can, talk to the tech.

If the tech has done a few filter changes, then he probably knows what to do to purge the air out. Not all techs are imbeciles.
