it's ok to only change your oil every 10,000 miles
No need to kill off any more synthetic dinosaurs. |

It's OK. In Europe many cars have a monitoring system that monitors the condition of the oil and many cars will go 15K to 20K miles between changes.
I remember 3K mile oil changes and 10K mile tune-ups. I'm really glad those days are gone.......... |

It's okay to do 10K OCI's. My dealership has been bugging me the last 2 weeks to bring my 2011 Golf in for it's first oil and filter. Only has 7500 kms. on the clock. Guess what ? No free oil changes in Canada. Wonder what their reasoning is $$$.

Just had my oil changed at 5K through VW dealership. No pressure from them to do it, I just feel 10K is a bit too long to wait for my TDI. Used Castrol SLX Professional LL03 SAE 5W-30. I drive about 10K per year mostly city driving. Average 36 mpg.

I too, was initially skeptical of a 10,000 mile interval. Upon extensive research and reading other people's used oil analyses it is PERFECTLY OK to change at 10,000. Oils today are not what they were 50, 30, 15 or even 10 years ago. This isn't your grandfather's car. CHANGE WITH THE TIMES... Bottom line: > The Common Rail TDI engine REQUIRES synthetic oil, and specifically VW 507.00 spec oil. > Use of synthetic oil AUTOMATICALLY allows you to DOUBLE the oil change interval (in any car) when compared with traditional oils. The reason for this is because synthetic oils won't sludge. They also suspend dirt and contaminants within the molecular structure of the oil better and far longer. This is where VW gets the 10,000 mile interval from (See, its really not that far fetched!) > In reality, the 10,000 mile interval is a CONSERVATIVE number. You can go somewhere around 15,000 miles+ for the oil to begin breaking down. > It IS a COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY TO CHANGE THE OIL IN THIS CAR BEFORE 10,000 miles!! This is fact! Yes sir, the Castrol SLX Professional Gold LL03 10W30 (even though the owners manual says 10W40) is one of the few 507.00 spec oils and is correct for use in the CR TDI engine. I get it at my dealership for about $12 per bottle.

WOW! Thanks for at least agreeing with me on the oil used. While I appreciate your opinion, I change my TDI's oil the way I do because it's my car, my time and money, and my peace of mind. At about $52 per oil/oil filter change (through my dealership) using Castrol SLX Professional Gold LL03 10W30 twice a year I can live with that.
I can get Castrol SLX Professional Gold LL03 10W30 for about $8 per bottle through my dealership. Last edited by scruff1; 02-01-2012 at 06:19 AM. |

Thank you, that's good to know. I bet it is cheaper than the official VW oil. Where do you buy it?

I have looked for the SLX Professional Gold LL03 10W30 and have only found it at dealerships.
I changed my oil at 12000 km for my first one and used Mobile1 ESP 10W30. I got it at Pep Boys for about $9/qt. It carries the VW507.00 spec. 12000 km ~= 7500 miles. I changed it a little earlier as I do a lot of short trips in the city, only 6 miles (10km) to my work one way. |
