Is the vw implementation a button or is it supposed to just happen?
Sorry, but you did not teach her how to properly drive a manual transmisson if it cost you a clutch. The hill hold feature is not going to make your wife a better stick shift driver.

Can't speak for Bill, but my '12 with 6MT most definitely disengages the hill hold at the moment when power is applied, not on a set time interval. I'm still not 100% in love with the feature but it's growing on me, especially when parallel parking down a steep hill.

One thing that the manual mentioned, and which I've noticed, is that the car holds the brake with exactly as much force as your foot applies. Then, you do fight the brake for a tiny instant at the very beginning of the takeoff. I've found that if I step too hard on the brake while waiting for a light, it's hard to get a smooth launch. Using as little brake as possible to hold the car on the incline gives a much nicer takeoff.

Mine does the same as Bill's...when you depress the accelerator, the brakes disengage.

Mine is as well functioning like Bill's. It surprised me the first time I noticed it, but it's been a welcome feature. As soon as I apply gas, it releases. I was wondering why an earlier comment said drivers would become impatient.

Sounds like something was definitely wrong with yours.

Agreed with the other folks. Disengages when accelaerator is pressed, for sure.

OK guys, thanks very much for the responses. It sounds like the consensus is that if you hit the throttle, the Hill Holder will cancel without waiting for the 2 second interval to expire.

With mine and a few others the brakes do not release and you heat up the clutch until the 2 seconds are up.

That will go on the list of things to fix when the car goes in for warranty service at the dealer.

Thanks again to all helping out.

I have the hill-hold feature on my 2012 Highline TDi Golf (Canada).

Default More on Hill Hold

I am not enamored by hill hold at all.
I am not convinced that pressing the accelerator will release the brake. Even the owners manual makes no mention of that. I think the hill hold is strictly on a timer and the default of "normal" takes nearly 2 seconds. If you try to take off quickly you can stall the engine. There is also a "fast" setting that I will ask the dealer to switch me to. If I don't like that I will get them to take it off completely. With the setting as it is it will create unneeded clutch and brake wear. Don't give me no plastic saddle. I like to feel the leather when I ride!
