Default RNS 315 GPS system FAQ, features, and comparison of RNS315

http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q/a6/rns315-GPS-FAQ-VW.htm

The RNS315 is the replacement to the RNS310 system found only in Europe. It's the new in dash GPS system for VW Golf TDI starting in 2011 and replaces the RNS510 option in 2011. The 2011 VW Jetta TDI will still keep the RNS 510 (the larger more expensive HD screen system with hard drive). If you decide to buy it later or buy a RNS510 later you can always swap and retrofit it. I also see no reason why you couldn't buy a RNS-315 and install it in your 2011 Jetta TDI. The part numbers can be found in the article link.

I like the new price point but it would have been nice to keep the large screen but just lower the resolution from the HD screen of the RNS510 if they wanted to offer a cheaper system. I don't have an iphone but I know they have GPS applications and the large screen was one of the reasons to buy the OEM navigation vs. an app for your iphone.

Inside the article are some video reviews of a nearly identical unit, the RNS310 (only sold in Europe). The best one, shown below, was a Spanish review - my Spanish is broken but you can still figure out what's going on.

The article will be updated as more info comes out.

Looks nice. At least they still have a choice of the cheaper and more expensive one.

ipinch and turbopaul at millenium vw confirmed that the RNS 315 GPS system has internal memory for the maps.

I dug around some more and found that according to European literature, the RNS 315 has 4GB (4 gb) of internal flash memory to store maps. New maps can be loaded via the SD card slot.

I finally got and installed an RNS 315. I have made a new video and updated the article to reflect my findings. Although the video review is only 13 minutes long, it was actually 2 days work! I did a lot of retakes and editing to try and show all the features and smooth out the video flow. I also had to redo the title for the widescreen format. This is also the first video I've shot in HD. From now on, all the videos will no longer be in 640x480 because my camera finally broke. The new camera has glorious 1280x720 movie mode! Unfortunately it's only 30 frames per second instead of 60 frames per second. It would be nice to have a higher frame rate but it also takes up a lot more space and processing time. I apologize in advance for the shaky camera while driving, if you want to fix it with a good mount or help me get a better camera, the donation button is at the bottom of the forum. Enjoy, and I hope it helps people make up their minds when before buying this thing or adding it as a package.
