Charlie here in Mobile, AL. Just bought my first TDI last week. Wow, what a wonderful change in driving experience from my 2008 Prius. So much sportier! Really fun to drive, and more luxurious inside. One issue I'm having from the get-go is the front left wheel seems to "bottom out" easily on road bumps--makes a clunking sound. I'll bring it into the dealer to check it out and hopefully fix soon. If this sounds familiar to anyone, please let me know what it might be and how to fix. Once the 36,000 mile/3 year warranty expires, I'll be looking for a qualified non-dealer repair shop in my area (Gulf Coast of Alabama). Any recommendations appreciated. Dealer salesman told me not to use the cruise control for the first 5,000 miles. I've read the break-in recommendations on here and it seems a little complicated for this driver. Only been driving regularly for the past 5 years, in the Prius, which was problem-free for the 4 years I had it. Lived in NYC before that and didn't need/have a car. Point being I don't have a mechanic mentality at all, and have little interest in doing my own repairs/maintenance, and want to keep things simple for myself. Any simple break-in tips appreciated. That's it for now. Looking forward to learning more. |

Check out the new buying guide in FAQ for pics of the strut blockers. They could have left them in place and judging by your description, probably did. Just keep the revs going up and down for the first few thousand miles. This is natural on city but when on highway, speed up and slow down.

Will take it by the dealership today and have them look for strut blocks. Thanks for the tip!

Thanks folks. Saw the strut blocks in place this morning, stopped by the local VW dealership and they removed them. Riding much better now!

Strut blocks are only placed on the front struts right? Does the factory insert anything for the rear?

On this car, no. The sad thing is that they've been having this problem for years and it's clearly on the delivery checklist. There's no point in having a checklist if nobody follows it.
