Convert License Plate Lights to LED the Easy Way

I ordered up a couple of WLED-x6 bulbs from SuperBrightLEDs.com for less than $8. http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-b...-x6.htm#photos

Here's the install.

Start by pulling the license plate light. Just gently pry it out using a flathead screwdriver.

Gently pry the back off.

Replace burned out bulb with new LED.

Reassemble.

Repeat for other side. No bulb out warnings and, despite how it looks in the photo, it's actually brighter than stock.

Those are the natural whites. I put amber ones in for the front corner lights which seems to work really well.

What's special about these LEDs that they don't generate any bulb out errors? Built in resistors?

Nothing that I know of. The site I bought them from sells resistors, but I suppose the connector has enough resistance that it doesn't set off the bulb out warning.

You did change something in VCDS to get the LED headlights working, right? Maybe that's why.

I have LED tails so I'll let everyone know if there is an error from these LEDs with the LED tail VCDS change.

Please keep us updated. My gut feeling tells me it will have bulb out error on a stock setup and/or LED tails (I hope I'm wrong). I have not read anything about a direct VCDS coding to fix license plate bulb out (only for LED parking/city lights and LED tails).

I don't believe so. I had a bulb out warning for one of them to begin with, which is actually why I did the swap.
