"Volkswagen was able to hold on to 16th place in the ranking; seven of its 11 models scored average or better." – doesn't say which 7 models. |

It’s a collective overview; giving some indication as to how brands are performing across the board. If you look further (subscribe) you can see the ratings of every vehicle. As a subscriber I can tell you the Golf, (of which I have one on order) are highly rated.

In the wagon category, got a score of 81. The highest was 88, lowest was 73. Compared to other wagons it did average on reliability, depreciation, accident avoidance (whatever that means), acceleration. Better or best on economy, ride, comfort, ownership costs, crash protection and owner satisfaction. I'm certain the reason accident avoidance is low is bc most wagons today are luxury cars w/ sensors sticking out of every panel and red or orange lights everywhere telling you where you should and shouldn't go. |

Does it tell you different ratings for diesel and gasoline vehicles? Also, I'm not totally sure what you mean by "most wagons today are luxury cars w/ sensors sticking out of every panel and red or orange lights"? What sensors/lights sticking out of every panel? Keep in mind; ratings are only an indicator of predictability. Ratings are also the source of much disenchantment with something that you may have otherwise been perfectly happy. My 1995 540i had terrible ratings, yet somebody forgot to tell that to the copy I bought.

Consumer Reports has given ‘recommend’ status to Golf (both gas and TDI) and to both versions of the Jetta wagon, the Jetta is not listed as a ‘recommended’. They don’t compete directly against each other, so they are not rated or ranked against each other.
The Golf TDI is the top rated ‘Fuel efficient hatchbacks’ and the TDI JSW is rated 2nd behind the Mazda 5, and the gas JSW is rated 4th in the same category 'wagons'. The gas Golf is top rated in the category of ‘Small hatchbacks/wagons’. Also consider looking at Edmunds, MSN as those sites are free and offer different opinions. All agree in giving favorable ratings to both the Golf and the JSW. |
