Default Average mileage after 4,000 miles?

Now have 4,750 miles since purchase in late August - at 4,000 miles average mpg was 36 ( mix of freeway and local driving about 75-25% - including not exceeding 75% rpm in each gear through first 2,000 miles break-in. Last 750 miles average 35.9 mpg. Do others have similar or significantly different performance under similar driving conditions?

Thanks

I've got 8,500 on the odo and am getting in the low 40's consistently per tank (as calculated not using MFD which indicates a bit higher). Highway speeds 65 - 80 mph = 40%, local 2 lane 40 - 50 mph with few stops = 50% and stop and go = 10%. Seems to me that the best mileage comes from 40 - 55 mph driving with few stops. I guess I could do better by using the right lane on the freeway, but that would be hard to do as it cruises so nicely at 70 - 80 mph. I have the DSG and just love the tranny and how it downshifts by itself. Would never want an automatic after the DSG, of course I've been driving manuals for the past 40 years, first non-clutch I've had in my everyday commuter. John

Do you have a DSG? If so youre mileage is about right.

You will always have someone stop by and say they are getting 50mpg and something is wrong with your car.

My TDI gets 33-35MPG average with 65% HWY 35% city. I've noticed that cold start MPG's are in the low mid twenties until the engine warms up. When warm, my car gets 30 city and 42-44 hwy. My MFI is very optimistic reporting 6-7% higher MPG than calculated.

I'll confirm what SteveCA says about the cold weather. We have had a cold snap here, especially in the am lately 40's - 50's F and the MFD is showing mid 20's mpg until I get to operating temp and then it moves into the 30's and finally to low 40's. I've got almost 10k and yesterday for my 30 mile trip home from work the MFD reported 47.3, though again the MFD reports a bit higher overall than actual mpg's. But probably 44-45 would be accurate which I think is pretty good. I really don't expect the car to do better than that.
