Default Assembly

J, JSW TDI is assembled in Mexico. I read it has German engine, transmission, and some other minor parts. Golfs TDI are assembled in Germany.
My question is, does it feel like the quality of the Mexican assembly is not as great compared to the German assembly? Are Golfs of a better quality than JSW? At some point in the past, JSWs were assembled in Germany too, but that got transferred over to Mexico.
What do you think of the quality comparison of JSW and Golf?
Thanks in advance.

Seems to me that some of the world's worst quality stuff comes from Germany, so not sure I'd see that country as being superior to Mexico. Seriously, I've owned 3 German VWs in recent years and one Mexican one and I would have to say that the Mexican one appears to be better put together than the German ones.

As for the Golf versus JSW, I had a German GTI that was not so very well assembled and a Mexican JSW that appears to be substantially better assembled.

I would say in general the country of manufacture is not nearly as important as the manufacturer. Nikon builds fine cameras in Thailand and China. Apple builds very high quality stuff in China. Triumph's Thai motorcycles are every bit as good as the British ones. Honda's Thai and Italian motorcycles are as good as the Japanese ones.

Design problems (which tend to be somewhat endemic to German manufacturers) are going to persist irrespective of assembly location...so if you want a trouble-free motorcycle don't buy a BMW...even though it may have been assembled in Munich.

But back to your question. In my experience VW's design issues will affect their products irrespective of assembly plant, and we can only hope that those are getting fewer and further between. So far my Mexican JSW appears to be the best assembled VW product I've owned so far.

The Golf uses some better components but it's because it's a mk6 chassis, the JSW is using the mk5 sportwagen chassis. See the FAQ for some minor differences. As far as I know, the JSW was always built in Mexico. But build quality is the same whether built in Mexico or Germany.

IMHO, the biggest problem VW is parts design and dealer service. Lexus cars design problems too but their customers are still happier.

Just don't buy Mexican pharmaceuticals online Or any pills online for that matter!

Mexico has some serious drug issues. I'm just a bit afraid that someone on drugs connects wires to wrong poles, or attaches pipes to wrong sockets, etc...

The United States has serious problems with drugs and alcohol in the workplace as well. So, lets not point to many fingers. I do not believe that this issue should be a deal breaker.

I have owned VW's for twenty-five years. I have owned two of the Mexican built vehicles and found them to be pretty well assembled. Every car line is going to have cars that are "problem children". With VW the Mk III cars (1993-early 1999) the electronics and the wiring were disasters. Mostly because of parts purchased from former Eastern Bloc factories that had to find other people to make things for when Ivan (USSR) went out of business. These cars were such problems that VW nearly pulled out of the US market entirely.
The Mk IV cars (late1999-2005) were much better but had some issues too.
The MK V cars seem to be doing pretty well, but there is the HPFP issue that gets real expensive to repair. However, the JSW TDI you have talked about wanting is based on the Golf platform which is not having the issues that the sedan (MK VI) cars are having.

Have you looked at any of the crap that Gubernment Motors (GM) is putting out?

I think a lot of the "problem children" vehicles out there are not due to build issues or poor quality components, but more likely due to lack of general maintenance and substandard repairs (especially body shop work).

I say it all the time, take care of your TDI and it will take care of you.

However this is merely my opinion and worth exactly what it costs you.
I will now use my favorite disclaimer "Your mileage may vary".

There are no guarantees, you roll the dice and take your chance.

cheers

Sage advice. I'm at 178K and zero issues outside of warranty -- self maintained from day 1.

You have got to be kidding me! What if Fritz puts the wrong bolt on something because he had an extra pitcher of beer at lunch? Engineering makes or breaks the car, I'm sure VW made quality assurance manuals translated into Spanish and then made them into videos so the un-educated, drug sniffing, cement pouring, yard working mexicans could read it.

Next time you eat out, you may want to ask to oversee the kitchen, in case a mexican cook put a chicken breast in your burger by mistake.

Sorry for the lack of sensibility to the OP's ridiculous concern. I'll hold back next time.
