Default 2001 VW Jetta GLS Auto Alarm

Ok read the forum on disabling the alarm. I dont want to do that. Here is the problem:
Removed posts from battery, when reinstalled the car wont start with key "no crank".
Checked starter it will work if i jump it by the ignition key on, connecting a wire from positive battery post and touching the wire that goes from the battery to starter. It will start and run.

I drove it 10 miles home and it never turned off.

2nd thing. My wife broke the cylinder where the key goes in the door to open on drivers side. If you put key in and turn it while to a full 360 and does not unlock or engage any mechanisms.

Any advice?
