The differences in recommended wheel size for the TDI is due to generational differences, gearing and power differences, and stock wheel sizes. A wider wheel has more grip and "stretches" the tire sidewall but, everything else being equal, will normally give inferior fuel economy compared to a narrower wheel with the same tire. Choosing a wider wheel also requires wider tires which adds weight and could possibly rub and fail against suspension components in extreme cases. Therefore, the table below lists some recommended wheel sizes for TDI with stock height suspension. Also keep in mind that a tire that fits on, for example, a 6" wide wheel can have a contact patch of anywhere between 6-8" wide, depending on the tire design and size. Bolt patterns are not interchangeable.
